Asian Football Confederation alters format of multiple competitions

New Boss: Sheikh Salman

Looks like the head honchos over at the Asian Football Confederation will be making some changes in the coming months to how their competitions are run. Here’s a run down of what is due to be decided:

The Asian Champions League might switch to an East vs. West format perhaps in an attempt to reduce costs for some of the smaller clubs participating in the competition. From a developmental standpoint this is disastrous, but totally in line with how the AFC conduct business. This is the same organization that bars half the confederation from Asian Cup qualifying while ensuring direct entry for the top three finishers of the previous finals tournament.

Other forthcoming changes after the jump

  • WBPL clubs will no longer participate at the AFC President’s Cup after next year’s edition as it will be deprecated.
  • Starting in 2015 the winner of the West Bank Premier League will participate in the AFC Cup.
  • The AFC Challenge Cup will move to the Philippines if the Maldives does not start agreed upon renovations by December 15th.
Ah… Asian Football- the fun never ceases!
