Hebron: Mahmoud Wadi scored twice as Palestine’s Ahli Al Khalil handed Fanja of Oman a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday to secure the first win of their 2016 AFC Cup, Group D campaign.
Wadi gave his side the lead in the 23rd minute before doubling Ahli Al Khalil’s advantage in the 65th minute, leaving Abdulaziz Al Maqbali to claim a consolation for Fanja in the first minute of stoppage time.
The Palestinians had the better of the opening exchanges and Wadi claimed his first in the 23rd minute, when he rose highest to head home Islam Batran’s corner.
Fanja went looking for the equaliser but found themselves 2-0 down halfway through the second period with Wadi’s first-time finish following a low ball into the area from Shadi Shaban putting the home side further ahead.
The Omanis finally found their way onto the scoresheet as the game moved into stoppage time, with Al Maqbali converting following Jarlisson Santana’s free kick, but it was too late to spark a Fanja fight back.
The defeat leaves Fanja without a win in their first three games while Ahli Al Khlail picked up their first victory of the campaign after losing their opening match against Bahrain’s Muharraq.
