10th edition of WAFF Championship to take place in early 2021

In the midst of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has a stoppage of nearly every single football competition in the world. At the time of writing we have no concrete timetable for the completion of the 2019/20 season domestically and internationally.

This has thrown international football into disarray. The Euros and Olympics have been rescheduled to 2021 and Asian 2022 World Cup qualification has no restart date at the time of writing.

That said, the West Asian Football Federation Championship has announced that the next edition of the tournament will go ahead on schedule. The biennial tournament was not played in 2016 and the 2018 edition took place in 2019.

For the first time since its inception in 2000 all federations making up the West Asia sub federation will participate.

The United Arab Emirates will participate for the first time and will play hosts to the 12 teams.

Palestine- alongside Jordan- has participated in every edition and this will mark their tenth participation. Al-Fida’i have never progressed from the group stage but registered their best performance in the 2019 tournament- beating Yemen and Syria and holding Lebanon to a draw en route to a second place group stage finish.

Tournament organizers have released no additional details other than the dates of the tournament (January 2-15).
