June 4th, 2023: This Week in Palestinian Football
Ataa Jaber commits, Zaid Qombor (potentially) quits, and much more from the world of Palestinian Football
Ataa Jaber’s switch could be a watershed moment
The earth shattering news this week? Ataa Jaber will represent Al-Fida’i giving Palestine a talented box-to-box midfielder to pair with the 3Ms- Mohammed Rashid, Mohammed Darweesh, and Mohammed Yamin. Palestine’s midfield was missing a dose of creativity following the sudden retirement of Nazmi Albadawi and Ataa Jaber is a perfect replacement. Although more of a number 8, the Majd Al-Krum native showcased his offensive capabilites this season producing six goals and six assists for Neftchi Baku in the Azeri top flight.
There is little doubt that Ataa Jaber will bring plenty of quality to the team on the field but he will be more valuable to the national team for his off field presence. Ataa Jaber is still in his prime (28), he has played nine seasons in the Israeli topflight, and he is coming off the best season of his career. 12 goal involvements from midfield is nothing to scoff at.
Once Ataa realised it was possible to play for Palestine he bided his time, worked hard, moved abroad, did the paperwork and made it happen. Ataa might just be the player that inspires Palestinian footballers within the Green Line to do the same.
Zaid Qombor to leave Wehdat?
