What's going on with Wessam?
The Palestine striker was one of 44,548 people in attendance at Lusail Stadium vs. Tunisia but rumors are swirling about a return to the pitch.
Since a record breaking transfer from Al-Ahly to Columbus Crew Palestine fans have wanted two things for Wessam Abou Ali. Goals- which he has duly delivered (three goals in five MLS games) and an early MLS Cup exit which has also transpired.
Unfortunately for fans of Al-Fida’i and Columbus, Abou Ali suffered an ankle injury which curtailed his season with his new team. When the injury was announced it seemed a return to the side for the playoffs was possible. Unfortunately, the 26 year old missed playoff series against Cincinnati FC that took place just before the November international break.
According to the striker himself, he only has just returned to full training. On his personal Instagram account, he himself described the chance of a national team return as “very slim”.
In spite of all signs pointing to no last minute surprise the continued absence of Badr Moussa has left plenty of room for speculation. The rumor mill was sent into overdrive when former Palestine captain, Ramzi Saleh, stated that “Wessam Abou Ali will be joining the national team in the coming days.”
The former goalkeeper was a guest on beIN Sports studio which gave an air of gravitas to the statement.
Later that night, Abou Ali gave an interview to Abu Dhabi Sports where he reiterated that he was in Qatar as a supporter and humbly deflected the attention unto his teammates who had put together a fanstastic run of matches against Libya, Qatar, and Tunisia.
Football Palestine has spoken with multiple sources within the national team and they have reiterated the striker’s words. He is simply not match fit. As for Badr Moussa; the player remains in Egypt in spite of the fact that he is part of the registered 23-man Arab Cup squad.
